It was a amazingly beautiful sunny day last Wednesday. I decided it was time for a road trip. I gassed up the car and off we went. Destination: Fort Ligonier in lovely Ligonier, PA. The drive out was smooth and easy; no hurry. The sun shining through all the greenery was awesome after all the cold gray days of this past winter. A little over an hour later, we were there.
I've been going to the fort since the 1960s when I was just a kid. I loved it then and I still love it now. There is always something new to see and learn.
The fort has been reconstructed to be close to the original that was built as a supply depot for the British Campaign against Fort Duquesne. George Washington spent time there as a young Virginia Officer. I always take the tour because there is new information each time I do. The history museum is a fantastic way to learn about the fort and the French and Indian War. There is a also the Washington Room with artifacts from the future President of the United States. Last, but not least, there is an art gallery as well with some fabulous portraits.
Done with the tour, we headed up for some lunch in the square and then grabbed some ice cream. There are many cool little stores and galleries to explore nearby. We strolled around and checked them out. It was a great day all in all.
